Who Am I?
I was raised on a small farm near the community of Taber, Alberta as the oldest child to Gord and Ina Tams. Learning has always been a part of my world as the farm was always changing. Evolving from a chicken farm, to beef and finally resting with trees there was always something new to learn. Anyone who has been to Southern Alberta knows that there is enough chicken and beef, but there sure isn't enough trees, and so that was where my family found their place. It is the same with teaching profession for myself. After graduating from high school, I was unsure as to where I belonged in the world. Throughout high school , I had been working at a welding shop, and had been considering a job in the trades, but had not found that it was especially fulfilling. I changed fields and was soon employed as a community support worker for persons with disabilities. Though I did love it, I still felt like I had not found my place. I decided to change it up again and joined a program to become a certified backpacking guide. I learned a wide variety of outdoor skills and worked at a summer camp as an outtrip director, and a rock climbing and canoeing instructor. After 2 years, I realized a few things. I was ready to move forward with my education to university, and I was passionate about teaching kids.
I began attending the University of Lethbridge in 2009. My original goal in starting university was to apply to be a land surveyor for the government up in the Northwest Territories. I enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Native American Studies in order to educate myself about Canadian issues and the land from a different perspective. Learning about the Native perspective has helped me realize that teaching is really my passion. Looking back throughout my life, I can really see that my place in this world is as an educator.
I am currently completing my third practicum at the U of L for the faculty of Education. I have been placed, by request at the Kainai Alternate Academy, where I am teaching literacy. It is, and has been an amazing experience so far, and I cannot believe all I have learned. I hope to complete all requirements for my B.A./B.Ed by April 2014 and will be seeking employment at that time.
As far as my personal life goes, I enjoy rock climbing, fishing, hiking and canoeing. I also love to travel and have visited Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Peru, Brazil and much of the United States. I am planning on getting married next summer, and have been working with my future hubby on restoring a 73 Volkswagen kombi bus on our spare time. :)
