In all of my practicums I encountered students in different developmental levels and with various learning processes. I found it difficult to have the entire class follow a single set of instructions and started to meet with students individually in order to gauge their understanding.
I truly believe that differentiation is the most important component in a classroom. It helps create an inclusive and safe environment, where students feel that they can be personally and academically successful. Planning for the success of the individual will help create an inviting and welcoming classroom to students of all levels.
In each of my practicums I encountered a diverse amount of learner needs. I had students who were well below grade level, whose reading and writing skills were so underdeveloped they found just being in class to be intimidating and scary, as well as students who were so far ahead of grade level that they were not getting enough stimulation in class. I also had students with special needs, such as ADHD, Anxiety Disorders, ELL, Autism, Aspburgers, Down Syndrome, FASD and Radical Attachment Disorder. I made deliberate effort to provide differentiated projects and instruction to all students so they would feel welcomed and significant in my classroom.
