Knowledge of Curriculum
Professional Semester I - Magrath Elementary, Grade 5
During this practicum I was required to explore the grade 5 science curriculum. This gave me a chance to overview what the overall goal of science studies is for students in Alberta, as well as take a detailed look of the specifics of grade 5 science. I taught the weather unit, and was required to utilize a variety of teaching strategies that made science fun, interesting and informative.
Professional Semester II - Kainai High School, Grades 9 &10
Part of the PSII semester is to teach the subject you majored in throughout university. For me this was Native American Studies and General Social Studies. I first took the course "Curriculum and Instruction for Social Studies Majors" at the university. The course took an in depth look at what the direction of the entire Social Studies curriculum is about. Alberta Learning puts a large emphasis in on an inquiry-based model, I entered the practicum focused on the long term goals of the curriculum.
In this practicum I taught 1 unit to the grade 9 students and 2 units to the grade 10's. My grade 9 unit was called "Governance and Rights" and covered 3 specific SLO, (Specific Learning Objective) and 6 skill objectives outlined in the Alberta Program of Studies. A copy of this unit is found under the "Organization and Planning" section of my website. I also covered half of the grade 10-1 curriculum, so I was required to teach 2 of the 4 related issues in the course. My first unit was called "Sustainable Prosperity" and my second was called "Responding to Globalization."
This practicum experience gave me a solid knowledge and understanding of the goal of Social Studies in Alberta.
Professional Semester III - Kainai Alternate Academy, Grades 7-12
I gained experience with the Language Arts curriculum from grades 7-12. I taught 2 courses at the school, the "Junior" class, which was students grades 7-9, and the "Senior" class which was students grades 10-12. As I was a part of an alternate style of education, many students had their own "program." While I used similar assignments with a few grades, or all, they would sometimes have different objectives. I would assess the assignment based on grade level, which meant that I really needed to learn the different aspects of the language arts curriculum.
