Organizational Skills and Planning
The top three things that effective teachers often refer to as their criteria for success are as follows: preparation, preparation, preparation. In the book Teaching Outside the Box, LouAnne Johnson states that "If you don't get all your ducks in a row well ahead of time, you may find yourself dealing with stray quackers all year long." Teachers find themselves running at top speed as the year progresses, and being prepared ahead of time will save time and energy later on. This gives the teacher time to really focus in on the students and what will transform them the most. I have provided several examples below to demonstrate my ability to fulfill the requirements of KSA #6 - Teachers plan for instruction, translating curriculum and outcomes into meaningful learning activities. I have included a long range plan and 2 unit plans. The long range plan is from my PSIII practicum where I was required to teach the "Literacy" course from September-December of 2013 to students from grades 7-12. The first unit plan is for a grade 9 Social class, and includes simple lesson plans that provide a breakdown of what resources and topics are covered during the unit. The second unit plan is a FNMI (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) unit which covers 2 weeks cross-curricular. It includes detailed lesson plans and resources.
